The Japanese hotel was opened with much fanfare in March 2017
as the world’s first robot-run hotel. TN wrote then, “They
built it, but will anyone come?” Guests did try it out,
but repudiated the whole thing with a myriad of complaints about

A Japanese hotel reportedly fired half of its nearly 250 robot
staff following various complaints from guests.
Henn-na Hotel, which employs various robots from check-in staff
to in-room help, reportedly decided to lay off half of its robot
employees after they proved to be more of a nuisance than a benefit.
According to CNET, “Henn-na’s robot staff was first
employed in 2015 with the aim of becoming ‘the most efficient
hotel in the world.’ But four years later, it seems that
the 243 robots are less of a novelty and more of a nuisance.
As a result, the Henn-na Hotel has fired half of them.”
CNET reported that a number of guests had complained about the
robots, which allegedly woke them up in the middle of the night,
interrupted conversations, and struggled to “answer basic
guest questions without human help.” “Bellhop robots
were designed to carry luggage, but they could only move on flat
surfaces and could only access a small number of rooms,”
explained CNET. “Their hotel careers were also cut short.”

Robots aren’t replacing everyone, but a quarter of U.S.
jobs will be severely disrupted as artificial intelligence accelerates
the automation of existing work, according to a new Brookings
Institution report.
The report, published Thursday, says roughly 36 million Americans
hold jobs with “high exposure” to automation —
meaning at least 70 percent of their tasks could soon be performed
by machines using current technology. Among those most likely
to be affected are cooks, waiters and others in food services;
short-haul truck drivers; and clerical office workers.
“That population is going to need to upskill, reskill or
change jobs fast,” said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at Brookings
and lead author of the report.
Muro said the timeline for the changes could be “a few years
or it could be two decades.” But it’s likely that automation
will happen more swiftly during the next economic downturn. Businesses
are typically eager to implement cost-cutting technology as they
lay off workers.
Some economic studies have found similar shifts toward automating
production happened in the early part of previous recessions
— and may have contributed to the “jobless recovery”

Waking Times - The first eight months of WWII with no fighting
was called The Phoney War. Using millimetre waves as a fifth-generation
or 5G wireless communications technology is a phoney war of another
kind.
This phoney war is also silent, but this time shots are being
fired – in the form of laser-like beams of electromagnetic
radiation (EMR) from banks of thousands of tiny antennas[1] –
and almost no one in the firing line knows that they are being
silently, seriously and irreparably injured.
In the first instance, 5G is likely to make people electro-hypersensitive
(EHS).[2] Perhaps it was sitting in front of two big computer
screens for many of the 18 years I worked at the UN that made
me EHS. When the UN Office at Vienna installed powerful WiFi
and cellphone access points – designed to serve large, public
areas – in narrow, metal-walled corridors throughout the
Vienna International Centre in December 2015, I was ill continuously
for seven months.
I did my best for two and a half years to alert the UN staff
union, administration and medical service to the danger to the
health of UN staff of EMR from these access points, but was ignored.
That’s why, in May 2018, I took the issue to the UN Secretary-General,
António Guterres [transcript]. He is a physicist and electrical
engineer and lectured on telecommunications signals early in
his career, yet asserted that he knew nothing about this. He
undertook to ask the World Health Organization to look into it,
but seven months later those public access points remain in place.

The new cell network uses high band radio frequency millimeter
waves to deliver high bandwidth data to any device within line
of sight.
“Today’s cellular and Wi-Fi networks rely on microwaves
– a type of electromagnetic radiation utilizing frequencies
up to 6 gigahertz (GHz) in order to wirelessly transmit voice
or data. However, 5G applications will require unlocking of new
spectrum bands in higher frequency ranges above 6 GHz to 100
GHz and beyond, utilizing submillimeter and millimeter waves
– to allow ultra-high rates of data to be transmitted in
the same amount of time as compared with previous deployments

are issues with the skin, which is interesting when you consider
that this technology is already being used in the military for
crowd control purposes.

at an international conference on the subject last year. Below

highways, “smart” cities and self-driving cars. Virtually

to super-high-speed, low- latency wireless communications from
any point on the planet, even in rainforests, mid-ocean and the
Antarctic.
What is not widely acknowledged is that this will also result
in unprecedented environmental change on a global scale. The
planned density of radio frequency transmitters is impossible
to envisage. In addition to millions of new 5G base stations
on Earth and 20,000 new satellites in space, 200 billion transmitting
objects, according to estimates, will be part of the Internet
of Things by 2020, and one trillion objects a few years later.
Commercial 5G at lower frequencies and slower speeds was deployed
in Qatar, Finland and Estonia in mid-2018. The rollout of 5G
at extremely high (millimetre wave) frequencies is planned to
begin at the end of 2018.

In order to transmit the enormous amounts of data required for
the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G technology, when fully deployed,

Unlike previous generations of wireless technology, in which
a single antenna broadcasts over a wide area, 5G base stations
and 5G devices will have multiple antennas arranged in “phased

laser-like beams that track each other.
Each 5G phone will contain dozens of tiny antennas, all working
together to track and aim a narrowly focused beam at the nearest

Depending on how paranoid you are, this research from Stanford
and Google will be either terrifying or fascinating. A machine
learning agent intended to transform aerial images into street
maps and back was found to be cheating by hiding information
it would need later in “a nearly imperceptible, high-frequency
signal.” Clever girl!
But in fact this occurrence, far from illustrating some kind
of malign intelligence inherent to AI, simply reveals a problem
with computers that has existed since they were invented: they
do exactly what you tell them to do.
The intention of the researchers was, as you might guess, to
accelerate and improve the process of turning satellite imagery
into Google’s famously accurate maps. To that end the team
was working with what’s called a CycleGAN — a neural
network that learns to transform images of type X and Y into
one another, as efficiently yet accurately as possible, through
a great deal of experimentation.
In some early results, the agent was doing well — suspiciously
well. What tipped the team off was that, when the agent reconstructed
aerial photographs from its street maps, there were lots of details

Platform and Product, announced in a Medium post on Monday that
Ford has committed to deploy cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X)
technology? in all new U.S. vehicle models starting in 2022.
The C-V2X tech will allow equipped vehicles to “talk”
to and “listen” to each other, as well as directly
connect with traffic management infrastructure (such as traffic
lights). Pedestrians can also use their mobile phones to convey
their locations to vehicles, making roads safer for walkers and
cyclists. “Driver-assist technologies today and autonomous
vehicles of the future utilize on-board sensors much in the way
people use their eyes to navigate complex environments,”

A growing number of Americans are OK with the facial recognition
technology, especially if it increases public safety, according
to a national survey released Monday.
Conducted on a national poll of 3,151 U.S. adults in December,
the survey found only one in four Americans believe the federal
government should strictly limit the use of facial biometrics
technology.
The survey also indicates Americans are more likely to support
any apparent tradeoff to their own privacy caused by facial recognition
technology if it benefits law enforcement, reduces shoplifting
or speeds up airport security lines.
Only 18 percent of those polled said they agreed with strict
limitations on facial recognition tech if it comes at the expense
of public safety, compared to 55 percent who disagreed with such
limitations. “People are often suspicious of new technologies,
but in this case, they seem to have warmed up to facial recognition
technology quite quickly,” said Daniel Castro, director
of the Center for Data Innovation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research
institute that conducted the survey.
“Perhaps most importantly, Americans have made it clear
they do not want regulations that limit the use of facial recognition
if it comes at the cost of public safety,” Castro said.

Public attention about 5G has been focused on the plans of telecom
companies to install millions of small cell towers on electric
utility poles, on public buildings and schools, on bus stop shelters,
in public parks, and anywhere they want in national parks and

In local urban communities there would be a cell tower approximately
every 500 feet along every street. As bad as these small cell
towers might seem from the standpoint of constant exposure to
radio frequency (RF) radiation in close proximity to the source,
perhaps an even more alarming prospect will be the beaming of
millimeter length microwaves at the earth from thousands of new
communication satellites.
The FCC gave approval to SpaceX on March 29, 2018, to launch
4,425 satellites into low orbit around the Earth. The total number
of satellites that is expected to be put into low and high orbit
by several companies will be 20,000 satellites. 5G will use Phased
Array Antennas to shoot Beams of Radiation at Cell Phones. These
satellites will use the same type of phased array antennas as
will be used by the ground-based 5G systems.
This means that they will send tightly focused beams of intense
microwave radiation at each specific 5G device that is on the
Earth and each device will send a beam of radiation back to the
satellite. Previous generations of RF cellular communication
used large antennas to send a blanket of radiation in all directions.
The lower frequencies they used and the broad distribution of
microwaves limited the numbers of cellular devices that could
